Lancefield Cricket Club’s Mark Caton has a tremendous input record both on and off the field for almost 20 years, and this was acknowledged when he received life membership of LCC on Sunday afternoon.
“His record alone warrants this award,” stated former president and life member Peter Burns in summing up the tremendous contribution Caton has made.
Burns outlined Caton’s role in reviving the club from a low ebb to its present vibrant situation.
A talented all-rounder aged 40, with four premierships behind him, he continues to be a fine leader, and made 76 runs for the Tigers in Jensen Shield the previous day.
On the committee for many years, Caton has served as president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, captain, coach and bar manager.
“I feel we’re the strongest we’ve been for a long time,” Caton said, in reflecting on the tough times with poor facilities and a shortage of players.
Now there are several senior, junior and women’s teams, and more families are becoming involved with cricket at Lancefield.
Caton played tribute to many who had contributed to the club over generations, including other life members.
Acknowledging the tremendous support from his family, he specially praised Chris Collins (former captain and coach) for revitalising his enthusiasm for the sport. The culture of the Tigers was now at a high level.
Strong club supporter Julie Caton (Mark’s mother) presented him with his life membership badge, at what was an enjoyable function at Lancefield Lodge.
