The Way forward …

Looking forward: Lena Way, pictured with daughter Illiana and son Ashton at Springfield, is enthused about returning as the Redbacks’ A-grade coach.

With an illustrious netball career behind her, Lena Way is returning to coach Romsey’s A-grade netball side next season.

The aim is to lift the standard and credentials of netball right across the four grades at Romsey – from the Under 19s, through B and C grades to the top side.

Back in 2016, Way found time to coach Romsey netballers, and a powerhouse A-grade side lifted the Riddell League flag the following season.

Staying involved with the Redbacks, Way has devoted time to coaching junior sides in more recent seasons.

It’s been a case of juggling a career, family and sporting interests, and Romsey Football Netball Club is thrilled that Way is able to commit to devoting time to revive the club’s netball fortunes.

Lena, husband Ben – Romsey Cricket Club’s captain-coach and footballer – with children Illiana 11 and Ashton 8, reside in the countryside at Springfield where they operate Springfield Eggs, an established free range enterprise.

As industry engagement manager with Central Ranges LLEN, Lena has a busy role there as well.

It’s a far cry from when she played netball at the highest level, but Way is keen to ensure Romsey netballers at all levels have the chance to fully achieve their potential.

Last season Romsey A-graders failed to win a match, and the only way to go is up.

“I’ll be aiming to give the younger players in particular something to aspire to, and there is certainly some talent there to work with.

“New players are very welcome as well, and we are having pre-season training sessions on October 20 and 27 for all senior grades.”

The message is – come along and try out.

Way is also confident there will be plenty of off-court assistance to help make netball a higher priority for the Redbacks.
