Meet Mee and Mee!

Carole and Wayne Mee.

A magical round where almost everything went right enabled Carole and Wayne Mee to become Dalhousie District Golf Association’s new mixed 4BBB stableford champions, with a very impressive tally of 50 points.

Last season Dalhousie scrapped the event through lack of interest, but this time 25 pairs entered and tackled the testing Lancefield course.

Fine conditions prevailed and the husband and wife Mee combination made every post a winner on their home course.

They scored points on every hole, making full use of their long handicaps (Carole 36, Wayne 24) and sharing the load.

The Mees admit they have played well at time together in previous mixed formats, but not for an entire round, clearly exceeding the expectations when they hit off in the shotgun start.

This time the pressure levels stayed down in the Sunday event with no stuff-ups, and their eventual 50 points bought looks of disbelief from some other competitors.

Runners-up on 45 points were Saowape McDowall and John Roberts.

DDGA president Mary Campbell made the presentations, with the Mees each receiving a Titleist hat and a $50 Active gift card.

Campbell also made a case for more mixed events being staged across Dalhousie in the future. A message for all member clubs.

The Mees only took up golf when they moved to Lancefield, having bought land on the Golf Links Estate some 32 years ago.

CRICKET COACH

Reflecting on past sporting involvements, Carole revealed she played women’s cricket, and married a Barber, living in Eltham where she started the juniors in the late sixties.

Carole enjoyed coaching several age groups, and believes she may well have been the first female to coach a future Australian Test player (male) in Adam Dale.

Dale, a prodigious swing bowler, moved from Victoria to Queensland and played two Tests and 30 Internationals from 1997 to 2000.

“After my first marriage finished I took up competitive 10 pin bowling at Moorabbin, where I met Wayne who was a very, very good 10-pin bowler.”

Wayne was also a good fast bowler with the Southern Cricket Club.

So they both had a keen interest in cricket and 10-pin bowling, both in a competitive nature.

They actually still go to Taylor’s Lakes to “roll a few down”, and sufficient to say, still have the ability to obtain good scores.

They have certainly enjoyed being long time Lancefield Golf Club members, taking on responsibilities, and enjoying the inter-action with other clubs.

In very recent years, the Mees have expanded their sporting pursuits to playing with the Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club.

Petanque is known as the ‘fun game’ combining skills and social enjoyment.
