In a spirited and emotional clash on Saturday, Gisborne-Kyneton United delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Sunbury Kangaroos 11.19 (85) to 0.2 (2) and remain on top of the ladder for the EDFL Division 2 Women’s Football League.

While the scoreboard tells a story of dominance, the game itself was fiercely contested, with Sunbury fighting tirelessly against relentless pressure from the GKU side.

The match was especially significant for GKU, who honoured the memory of beloved footballer and netballer Bekk Duggan, who died last year. Three of United’s players were especially close to her and worked with Gisborne FNC, Kyneton WFC and Sunbury Kangaroos to host the match, with all players wearing a pink armband in Bekk’s memory, as well as every player performing a cartwheel after each goal, a nod to Duggan’s vibrant spirit and her well-known love of celebrations.

Leading from the front were standout performers Alexia Todorovic and senior debutante Amy O’Kelly, both with two goals a piece. Hateley was dominant in the ruck and midfield all day and Cowan, McKenna and Lenius all had strong games, delivering consistent performances.

Logan-Jacobsen kicked three goals, with the game marked not just by skill, but by heart—and GKU’s unity, passion and tribute to Duggan made the victory all the more meaningful.
