GKU sends powerful message

Gisborne-Kyneton United delivered another commanding performance in Round 7 of the EDFL Division 2 season, taking on East Sunbury Thunder at Sankey Reserve in Gisborne.

Before the first bounce, GKU players donned red armbands in solidarity with clubs across Victoria, taking a stand against the recent funding cuts to the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation. The gesture also honoured the 31 women who have tragically lost their lives to gender-based violence in Australia this year — a powerful reminder that footy can be a platform for both community and change.

On the field, GKU were relentless. In a true team effort, the side boasted 14 separate goal kickers in a game that showcased their depth and cohesion. Todorovic starred in both the midfield and forward lines, putting in a standout all-round performance with 10 goals to her name. Williams was clinical in front of goal, finishing with four majors.

The midfield brigade fired on all cylinders, with Macumber and Hateley dominating the centre clearances, setting the tone for GKU’s fast, attacking play. On the wings, Dickins and Chadwick were tireless, driving relentless pressure and linking up well to maintain the team’s fast-flowing style of football. The usual GKU backline got their changes in the forward, with Sinclair, Mitchell, Lenius, Brancatisano and Peterson all kicking a bag of goals to cap off a great day at Sankey.

With momentum continuing to build, GKU’s strong showing sends a clear message, they are the team to beat this this season.
