Gisborne-Kyneton United played in another hard hitting clash between the two top sides on Saturday. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game, with Taylors Lakes taking a one-goal lead in the middle of the second quarter, GKU’s backline getting a serious workout with Lenius, Mitchell and Murphy all stepping up to stop Taylors Lakes converting their inside 50s into scores.
The momentum began to shift after half-time, as GKU adjusted their structure and lifted their intensity. Kat Bau had a commanding presence, rotating between the back flank and midfield to provide a strong link to the forwards. Her efforts helped open up the forward line, where Hateley and Todorovic capitalised on the improved delivery, each slotting two goals to swing the game in GKU’s favour.
GKU also celebrated Hayley Mitchell’s 100th game.
This victory sees GKU now sitting three games clear on top of the ladder — a strong position heading into the back half of the season. However, there’s still work to be done, with both the fast-finishing Sunbury Lions and the resurgent Kangaroos making statements with convincing wins in recent weeks.
GKU 8-10-58 def Taylors Lakes 4-4-28.
GKU Bests: Lucy Lenius, Ayesha Nicholson, Mairead Murphy, Katrina Bau, Hayley Mitchell, Lucy Herring.
EDFL Best on Ground: Katrina Bau.
GKU’s focus now turns to a crucial clash next Saturday, June 28, when they take on the in-form Sunbury Lions at Gardiner Reserve. First bounce is at 11.50am.
