The Castlemaine Magpies were thrilled to get back on the winners’ list as they defeated Kangaroo Flat in round 10 action last Saturday at the Camp Reserve.
The Magpie Seniors put in a solid performance against the Roos, storming home in the final quarter before an enthusiastic home crowd.
Flat were on top early with two quick goals to Jeremy Rodi and Jake Hywood, however, the Magpies soon warmed up and snagged one back through Archie Rixon.
The rest of the term descended into a scrap with neither side able to gain the upper hand and both sides peppering the goals to only come up with a handful of points.
At quarter-time the visitors led by seven points.
Kangaroo Flat got another goal on the board early in the second term through Nicholas Lang, but then the Magpies stood up with two goals to Jack Chester and one to Zachary Greeves turning the tide. Fellow Magpie Ronald Fejo and coach Michael Hartley added another couple late in the term to see the Magpies leading by 14 points at half-time.
Kangaroo Flat bounced back in the third with two quick goals to bridge the gap.
But Castlemaine had all the answers kicking another three to extend the margin to 18 points at the final change.
Castlemaine continued the momentum in the final term with goals to Hartley, Fejo and young star Curtis McLennan before Flat found another much-needed goal via Jake Hywood. But at the final siren Castlemaine had the crowd on its feet celebrating a 35- point win.
Best for the Magpies were Patrik Balta, Joshua Eyre, Kalan Huntly, Zachary Greeves, Harrison Sheahan and Jack Nuttall.
The Reserves started strongly and both sides were locked on 19 points apiece at quarter-time. But Flat slowly inched ahead of the Magpies over the remaining three terms to run out winners by 34 points.
Best for the Magpies were Thomas Ford, Campbell McLennan, Robert Muscat, Brodie Browne-Kerr, Ashton Frankling and Aidan Medlyn.
The Under 18s had a resounding win over the Roos by 46 points.
The Magpie young guns set up the win in the opening term kicking five goals to one. The Roos battled their way back across the second and third terms. But Castlemaine continued to dominate in the last term kicking two goals to one point be comfortable winners.
Best for Castlemaine were Caspian Lord, Oliver Britt, Oscar Giddings, Gabriel O’Sullivan, Saxon Sieber-Hogg and Cooper Mark.
WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
The Castlemaine Women’s football side hit the road to take on Marong at Malone Park in round 12 of the AFL Central Vic Women’s competition last Sunday June 29. The Magpies were fresh from the bye and determined to get back on the winners list after their shock loss to Sandhurst on June 15. The Magpies did just that smashing out a massive 96-point win over the Panthers. Best on ground was Hannah Cochrane. However, big wins by Eaglehawk in the last two rounds have seen them snag top spot from the dominant Magpie outfit.

NETBALL
On the netball court, A Reserve lost 39-57 despite some wonderful passages of play. Best on was Rachelle McLean.
B Grade lost 32 to 68 in a valiant effort. Best on was Lori Whaley.
B Reserve lost a tough battle 6-97. Best on was Ella Rixon.
17 & Under lost a close bout against the Roos 32-39. Best on was Ellie Clifford.
THIS WEEKEND
In this weekend’s matches, the Castlemaine FNC sides will hit the road to face South Bendigo at Harry Trott Reserve in round 11 action on Saturday, while on Friday evening the Women’s Football side heads north to tackle White Hills under lights in the Indigenous Round.
