Lions, Bombers and Steaders notch up wins

Harcourt played host to Talbot in round 13 of the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League last Saturday in a great contest between the two top five contenders.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the first term slamming through six goals to the Hawks’ three to hold a 20-point advantage at quarter-time.

Harcourt continued to dominate in the second kicking another three goals to extend their lead to 47 points while denying their visitors a solitary point.

Talbot managed to sneak through another goal in the third stanza and shut down the Lions’ avenues to goal to keep them scoreless for the term.

However, Harcourt still led by 38 points at the final change.

The final term saw both sides striving to grab the upper hand and kicking two goals each. But in the end the Lions walked away with a comfortable 39-point win.

Best for Harcourt were Thomas Walters with 5 goals, Braydon Vaz, Jack Threlfall, Kaleb McBride, Cameron Anderson and Geoffrey Jolly.

Despite the lost Talbot sits in third spot and the Lions in fifth.

Campbells Creek welcomed Lexton to the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

Creek has continued to show improvement week in and week out and Saturday showed positive signs that a win is not too far off.

The Magpies opened their account with two goals and Lexton kicked five to hold a 22-point buffer at the first break.

Creek kicked another two in the second and managed to contain the Tigers to 1.6 to trail by just 16 points at half-time.

The Magpies found another in the third and continued to stifle the Tigers opportunities keeping them to 2.4.

At the final change, Creek was still in touch with 23 points separating the sides.

However, the Magpies ran out of steam in the final term kicking one goal to Lexton’s four to eventually go down by 40 points.

Best for Creek were James Haber with 3 goals, Matthew Cox, James Martinovic, Caleb Mountford, Nicholas O’Brien and Dylan Stevens.

Maldon played host to the Maryborough Giants and the crowd was treated to quite the spectacle with both sides bagging a swag of goals.

The Bombers kicked four in the opening term to the Giants three to lead by nine points at quarter-time.

To their credit the Giants lifted in the second term smashing through another six goals to Maldon’s three to turn the tables and hold an eight-point lead at half-time. The Giants’ Jacob Rollason was on fire and in everything going on to kick 8 goals.

The third term was an arm wrestle with Maldon kicking another three and the Giants four to hold on to their eight-point advantage at the final change.

But Maldon was not going to let the opportunity slip by and brought the big guns in the final term smashing on another eight goals and holding the Giants to just three to regain the lead and snatch a 17-point victory.

Best for the Donners were Ashley Woodman, Xavior Noy, Darcy Kelly, Natnael McLaren, Callum Buchanan and Billy Johns.

Newstead welcomed the Avoca Bulldogs and made positive inroads in the first term kicking four goals to the Bulldogs’ 1.2. The Steaders led by 29 points at the first change.

The second term was a more even contest with both sides kicking two goals each. Newstead retained a 20-point advantage at half-time.

The Roos bounded into the third term full of gusto and smashed on another five goals, while holding the Bulldogs to just 1.4 to extend their lead to 43 points at the last change.

The Bulldogs did not bow down and were superb in the final term kicking another six goals, but Newstead had all the answers kicking six of their own to win the match by 32 points.

Best for the Steaders were Michael Runciman with 4 goals, Hayden Hall, Joel Smith, Harrison McGuire, Jovian Goulton and Nicholas Woodman.

The win sees Newstead sitting in eighth spot.

In other matches, Natte Bealiba defeated Carisbrook by 29 points to cement second spot while Brook sits in fourth, and Dunolly had a narrow 12-point win over Navarre be sixth ahead of the Grasshoppers in seventh. Trentham had the bye but still remains in top spot on the ladder.

NETBALL

In round 13 A Grade matches, Harcourt 38 lost to Talbot 54. Best for the Lions was Jordan Bagley. Campbells Creek 41 lost to Lexton 52. Best for Creek was Elouise Jones. Maldon 29 lost to Maryborough Giants 97. Best for Maldon was Alice McManus. Newstead 40 lost to Avoca 63. Best for the Steaders was Tayla Gale. Natte Bealiba 76 had a big win over Carisbrook 47 and Dunolly 30 lost to Navarre. 48. Trentham had the bye.

THIS WEEKEND

Natte Bealiba hosts Trentham in what should be one of the highlights of the round, Lexton tackles Harcourt, Carisbrook takes on Dunolly, Talbot versus Maldon, Navarre welcomes Newstead and Maryborough Giants face Avoca. Campbells Creek has the bye.
