Castlemaine Cycling Club hosted a record breaking round of the AusCycling State Cyclo-Cross Series on Sunday July 13.
The event attracted the largest number of entries for the series so far with over 110 riders.
For those new to it, Cyclo-Cross (CX) is a fast, muddy and action-packed style of racing that combines road racing, mountain biking and obstacle navigation — all on a short, technical course.
Riders travelled from across Victoria and the club was especially excited to see a big increase in female and gender-diverse participants.
This event marked a new direction for Castlemaine Cycling Club, which has traditionally focused on road and track racing.
By embracing CX, the club aimed to bring fresh cycling experiences to the local community.
The event came together with critical support from the Shepparton and Brunswick cycling clubs, who loaned course-marking equipment, as well as local support from the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve Committee and the Campbells Creek Football Netball Club.
The day featured races for all levels, from open-entry events and balance bike races for juniors, right up to the men’s and women’s elite fields.
The club is already planning to return next year with an even bigger event — and potentially a party to match.
Club president Emma Jackson declared, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had at a local sporting event!”
