Bulldogs overcome valiant Pies

The Castlemaine Magpies were overcome by a dominant Gisborne outfit at the Camp Reserve last Saturday.

The Magpies had came into the match feeling confident after a narrow loss to South Bendigo but the Bulldogs were looking to back up after a close win over Eaglehawk.

The Bulldogs were first on the board off the boot of Harry Luxmoore.

Castlemaine soon replied with goals to Dylan Hickey and Bodhi Robinson.

Gisborne snatched four more via James Gray, Bradley Bernacki, Ryan Bourke and Matthew Merrett, before Magpie Jack Chester stood up and grabbed another for Castlemaine.

At the first break Gisborne led by 14 points.

The Bulldogs continued to pepper the goals in the second term smashing through another six goals to Castlemaine’s 1.4 to extend the margin to 42 points at half-time.

Gisborne came out swinging again in the third, slamming through another three goals via Pat McKenna, Campbell Johns and Matthew Merrett, before the Magpies found some fight and goaled through Joshua Eyre.

Four more followed from Magpies Hunter Staples 2, Brodie Byrne, and Bodhi Robinson. The home side winning the quarter but still trailing by 28 points at the final change.

Gisborne’s Bradley Bernacki goaled early in the last term, but the Magpies again lifted and kicked three successive goals through Patrik Balta, coach Michael Hartley and young gun Curtis McLennan to bring it back to 14-point deficit.

However, a late goal to the Bulldogs’ Dylan Johnston put the game beyond doubt and the visitors ran out winners by 21 points.

Best for the Magpies were Patrik Balta, Curtis McLennan, Darby Semmens, Kalan Huntly, Rhys Jenkins and Hunter Staples,

Best for Gisborne were James Gray, Bradley Bernacki, Matthew Merrett, Lachlan Evans, Darcy Young and Kane Minns.

The Castlemaine Reserves turned the tables winning their clash 69-38.

Best for the Magpies were Riley Pedretti, William Marks, Ashton Frankling, Declan Slingo, Brodie Browne-Kerr and Tyson Hickey.

Best for the Bulldogs were Jack Long, Hugo Olive, Hayden Doricic, Heath Simpson, Mitchell Ponton and Taj Collings.

The Bulldogs Under 18s narrowly won a tightly contested clash 52 to 46.

The best for the Magpies were Patrick Leathem, Saxon Sieber-Hogg, Oliver Britt, Caspian Lord, Oscar Giddings and Jackson Balcombe.

Best for the Bulldogs were Lucas Hannon, Lucas Borg, Will Elliott, Jacob Muscat, Lucas Carnell and Declan Beggs.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

The Castlemaine Women’s football side produced a dominant display against North Bendigo defeating the Bulldogs 148-0. Best for the Magpies was Abbey Bertram.

The Gisborne-Kyneton Women’s football side had a strong win over Sunbury 74-9.

NETBALL

On the netball court in A Reserve Gisborne 66 defeated Castlemaine 39.

The Bulldogs also dominated in B Grade with a comprehensive 100-9 win.

Gisborne’s B Reserve side also claimed the honours 92-16 against a valiant Castlemaine.

The 17 & Under clash was the match of the day with the result going right down to the wire and Gisborne emerging victorious 24-27.

THIS WEEKEND

This Saturday the Magpie football and netball sides will hit the road to face Eaglehawk and Gisborne will welcome Sandhurst. The Castlemaine Women’s football side will also make the trip to Canterbury Park to take on Eaglehawk Friday evening at 7.15pm under lights in the Pride Round.
