Thompson tocoach in BFNL

Nathan Thompson has signed on to be senior coach for Broadford Football Netball Club.

Nathan Thompson left Kyneton as a very talented teenage footballer. He played 179 AFL games and kicked 327 goals with Hawthorn and North Melbourne, mainly as a quality, high-marking forward.

Last week Broadford Football Netball Club announced that Thompson (pictured) had signed up to be ‘club coach — senior football’ for the next two seasons in the Bendigo League.

Described as “one of Kyneton’s favourite sons” when he was appointed as Kyneton Under 18s coach for two seasons in 2019, Thompson is taking on a big role with Broadford, known as the Kangaroos.

Thompson coached several junior teams with Kyneton after he retired as a player in 2016, having booted 31 goals in 13 games with Kyneton in the Bendigo League. He has helped in various areas with the Tigers since retiring.

Broadford sees their new coach as bringing elite level football experience, deep community values, and a passion for youth development at a pivotal time in the club’s history.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Broadford,” Thompson said.

“This is a unique and special opportunity to help restore a proud community club and to work closely with young players to build something lasting.

“I’m passionate about creating an environment that supports development, success and belonging,” Thompson said.

Broadford president Bonnie Cavanagh-Welch said the appointment of the former AFL topliner reflected the club’s strong vision for the future, while honouring the continuous service and commitment of the netballers and those who had remained dedicated to the club during what had been a challenging period.

“We’re thrilled to welcome someone of this calibre and character,” Cavanagh-Welch said.

“This is a major step forward as we reignite our football program and strengthen our community foundations.

“Nathan’s values align perfectly with our club’s directions — inclusive, community-minded and development driven,”

Broadford has had a chequered football history, being in several different leagues — including the former Waranga-North East, Riddell and Heathcote — over a long period.

It has a very strong netball base, but is resurrecting football when it joins the Bendigo League next season. Junior football is strong in Broadford.
