A promising young star with the Gisborne Thunder Swimming Club had a successful weekend at the Victorian Country Short Course Championships held in Bendigo this month.

Eleven-year-old Samuel Russell delivered an outstanding performance, earning one silver and three bronze medals — the most successful individual performance in recent years.

The club made a powerful statement at the championships, with its largest squad of 13 swimmers competing in 48 individual events achieving 33 personal best times. Several swimmers qualified for the Victorian State Age Championships being held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in September.

“We are in a rebuilding phase as a club and this is an incredible achievement by our swimmers and coaches,” said club spokesperson Kate Hager.

“Looking ahead we are exploring options on how to extend our reach across the Macedon Ranges to see the growth in the club continue.”

Anyone wanting to join the club or to find out more can contact memberships@gisbornethunder.org or come along to the September club night at Gisborne Aquatic Centre, registrations open from 4.45pm.
