
Woodend Golf Club’s 101st Annual Tournament held over three days was a tremendous success, with generally favourable weather.
It could not have been staged without the welcome support of numerous sponsors, and the influx of players from 16 different clubs to back up the locals for the Men’s Open on the Sunday. There were 83 players overall.
A play-off was needed to determine the winner of the Keating’s Hotel Cup after Simon Trickey (Future Golf) and Brendan Larkins (Gisborne) tied on 67 off the stick.
Trickey won on the second play-off hole.
Handicap winners: A — Matthew Pearce 73-9-64; B — Mark Hutchison 75-11-64; C — Wayne Kupke 86-26-63.
The ladies competed for the Annette Wiber Cup with Kristie Kennedy (Ballarat) the winner with 77, and Trentham’s Sue Byrne runner-up.
“You guys do an awesome job, and what a course! I will definitely be back,” Kennedy said at the presentation.
Nyssa Payne (Woodend) was the handicap winner with 100-36-64.
NTPs went to Jack Roberts (2), Danny Bellchambers (2), Mark Hutchison and Patrick Doyle.
120 PLAYERS
The Bob Mason Classic on the Saturday drew a capacity field of 120 players (40 teams) for the three-person Ambrose.
A tremendous performance from Gisborne’s Alexander Fraser, Greg Paine and Braydn Beattie produced a 52 nett.
Runners-up were Chris Hale, Xander Brown and Nick Lethbridge on 52.667, with Andy Gregory, Guy Moxley and Susie Baldwin third on 55.5.
The gross winners were Simon Mason, Ethan Bell and Troy Williams with 58, with Mount Macedon’s Matt Willis, Darcy Doyle and Jim Hynes runners-up with 60.
Kevin Dorney, Mark Hilton, Rick Cunningham, Sam Barker, Tim Scoble and Troy Williams were NTPs.
GOLD CUP WINNER
The tournament began on Friday with the prestigious John Dewar Gold Cup, and an impressive 67-2-65 from Grant Davies was rewarded with the cup.
A-grade went to Matt ‘Poppa’ Long with 79-11-68 from Kenny Turley 77-8-69.
Tyson Payne 96-27-67 won B-grade from Xander Brown 91-21-70.
Andrew Davies claimed the Fred Holman Trophy with 72-3-69.
