Kyneton’s Anthony Mathison took out this season’s Highlands playing area Singles title in a strong performance of draw bowling over Diggers Rest’s Devendra Shukla played at Woodend Bowling Club on Sunday.

Mathison started strongly, scoring 3 on the first end, gaining the momentum that saw him taking 4 shots on both the 13th and 17th ends to take out the game on the 20th end.

Playing off for the region final in the afternoon, Mathison was unable to continue through, eventually losing to the Ballarat playing area champion Craig Ford from Victoria Bowling Club.

The game, played over 21 ends, saw Ford take a commanding 15 shots to 2 by the ninth end before Mathison won the mat and extended the length of the ends to commence a revival to take his score to 10 by the 15th end. Ford then regained the mat and shortened the ends to his advance and, managing the strong blustery winds that came into play in the later stages, proceeded to take command and finished off the game winning 25 shots to 12.
