Women’s football in the Riddell League kicked off on Saturday evening, with reigning premiers Macedon scoring a convincing win over Lancefield, and Riddell taking control in the second half to defeat Mount Alexander Falcons.
On Anzac Day this Saturday, there’s a blockbuster encounter between Macedon and Riddell at Tony Clarke Reserve at 5pm with both sides keen to establish early supremacy in the four-team competition.
The prize for finishing on top of the ladder is a spot straight into the grand final.
Lancefield travel to play the Falcons at Harcourt at 2.30pm.
SMOOTH TRANSITION
Macedon’s co-captains Brianna Woodburn and Ruby Watts made a smooth transition from a cricket season with Gisborne to showing much of the form that made them outstanding players for the Cats last season.
“We’re hoping to have a really good season,” Woodburn said before the game, played in ideal conditions at Tigerland.
Taya Konias was outstanding for the Cats, and Lilli Collins, Laura Wilkinson and Alex Cairney also made their presence felt.
Macedon led throughout, opening with two first quarter goals from six scoring shots, while the Tigers managed two points.
Konias and Woodburn kicked multiple goals. Lancefield worked hard and did well to restrict Macedon to just 1.5 in the second half.
Could the Tigers score a goal in the match? Alice Bromley broke the drought in the last term and the side is looking for improvement against the Falcons.
Catriona Goldsworthy, Luzanne de Kock, Esme Keen, Harmony Cassar, Bethany Lyons and Kloe Soper were listed as the Tigers’ best.
Final score: Macedon 5.12 d Lancefield 1.6.
At Riddell, the Bombers were forced to work hard in the first half by the Falcons, with the half time margin just eight points.
Riddell monopolised the ball in the second half, with the visitors failing to score despite defending strongly.
Lauren Shaw, Jessica Sproule, Ava Osborne and captain Tess O’Donnell were among the Bombers’ best, with Osborne managing two goals.
Ella Hayes, Amy Tacey, Tamara Meehan and Amalia Rahmani stood out for the Falcons, who are looking forward to the encounter against Lancefield.
