The Wedge-Tailed Eagles hosted Pink Round at Woodend Racecourse Reserve on Sunday, taking on reigning premiers Castlemaine in a hard-fought contest while raising funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia.
With a finals chance still in sight, the Wedgies came out firing despite challenging windy conditions. Co-captains Teagan Ainslie and Ayesha Nicholson were influential through the midfield, driving the ball forward and giving the Eagles plenty of opportunities throughout the day.
There was plenty of back and forth and great play from both sides, Eagles’ wingers Kat Turnbull and Mairead Murphy worked hard down the line to help cut the run of Castlemaine and keep the Wedgies in the game.
Castlemaine showed why they are the defending premiers, holding their composure and making the most of their chances to maintain the lead. Magpie Paynton Jolliffe was outstanding, playing a key role in keeping the visitors’ momentum going when it mattered most.
For the Eagles, Henderson provided one of the highlights of the day with a superb goal from outside the 50, while Eagles leading goal kicker Jorja Bennett continued her strong season with a series of contested marks inside forward 50 and a goal of her own.
Although the Eagles went down 6.6 (42) to 2.9 (21), the performance was another positive step for a side continuing to grow in its first official season together. The club also celebrated a successful Pink Round off the field, raising more than $1000 for Breast Cancer Network Australia to support vital breast cancer research.
The Wedge-Tailed Eagles return to Woodend Racecourse Reserve on Sunday August 9 at 1pm to take on White Hills in an important clash as they continue their push towards finals.
