Former Australian Test cricket captain, Graham Yallop, received an enthusiastic welcome at Hanging Rock Cricket Club on Sunday morning.
Yallop, a long-time coach at various levels, told the young players the day was designed to enable them to learn as much as they can.
“You never know where you are going to end up,” Yallop said, outlining the career path for cricket for young players starting at country clubs and moving right through the ranks, if they prove to be good enough.
Shaun Brown said the aim was to make the occasion fun, and a learning experience.
The importance of asking questions to the various coaches present was emphasised.
Yallop congratulate Hanging Rock Cricket Club on its initiative to provide the clinic, and wished the club and its players well for the future.
Hanging Rock president, Peter Walsh, said Sunday’s clinic was designed to complement the club’s coaching.
“Our main focus is junior player and retention, whilst making the game enjoyable for participants.”
At present, Hanging Rock has 40 registered junior players, including six girls, on the books.
The club fields two Under 11 sides, and U13 and U17 teams, as well as its two senior sides, which have begun the season well.
“New players are always welcome here,” Walsh added.
The training program on Sunday saw players split into three groups, with video information, net sessions, and fielding/ modified game activities being shared around.
