Woodend residents joined in a global day of action on Saturday by holding a plastic attack at their local Coles supermarket.
A plastic attack is where shoppers simply leave behind the excessive plastic after they have purchased their goods. This puts the emphasis back on the supermarkets to do something about the volume of plastic on their products.
World Plastic Attacks happened all over the world on September 15, from Brazil to Mozambique.
“Woodend is a small country town with a single supermarket. Our Coles store has a community-minded manager who over the years has given full support to a wide variety of community endeavours,” spokesperson Lisa Richards said.
“This event is about consumers asking corporations to stand up and be responsible for the rise in plastic packaging taking over our shopping.
“We were visited by Nicole Rowan, Greens candidate for Northern Victoria. We collected a full trolley of soft plastics and another of hard plastics.”
Ms Richards said the supermarket manager had a big smile on his face at the end of the day as there was no disturbance to his store. In fact, a few extra people were shopping there so they could take part in the plastic attack!
“We had lots of interesting conversations about ways to reduce our plastic consumption, what items could be sent to Redcycle and how there was a clear need for alternative food packaging materials,” Ms Richards said.
“The community also donated tinned food and toiletries to Kyneton Caring Community as part of the plastic attack.
“All in all, a great event!”
