Riddell go down

Riddell’s position as 2025 football premiership favourite is on shaky ground after the Bombers were overrun by six goals to one in the last quarter against an extremely well organised Diggers Rest on Saturday.

The 10.8 (68) to 6.9 (45) sixth round upset means Riddell’s prospects for three flags in a row are still very much alive, but Diggers Rest and other contenders including Wallan and Kyneton are likely to study precisely what occurred to restrict the Bombers to such a low scoring ratio.

Diggers Rest certainly showed considerable improvement on a fortunate tie at Macedon on Anzac Day.

Somewhat wet conditions for the first time across parts of the RDFNL this season gave coaches and players plenty to think about.

The Bombers have appeared comfortable until now, and the Burras (as Diggers are often referred to) gained a real confidence boost.

Playing coach Sean Campbell was extremely pleased with his side’s overall effort against the Bombers, and feels the team has further steps forward to make as players get to know the capabilities of their teammates, several of whom are in their first season with the club.

Riddell premiership coach Arron ‘Skip’ Bray may not be all that concerned his side has received a reality check at this stage of the season, rather than have it happen come finals time.

Both sides struggled for goals in the first three quarters, with Riddell five points clear at the last break.

It was a shock to many onlookers to see Diggers Rest take full control as play opened up in the last term.

Restricting ace Bomber forward Dean Galea to one goal played a role in the outcome.

Diggers Rest gained a footy trifecta, also winning the Reserves and Under 19.5s matches.
