Magpies valiant against rampaging Hawks

The Castlemaine Magpies played host to Eaglehawk at the Camp Reserve last Saturday in round six action and succumbed to a rampaging Hawks side.

The Magpies were first on the board with a goal through Josh Eyre, but the Hawks soon found their groove and slammed on eight of their own to jump out to an early 44-point lead at the first change.

The Hawks kicked two more early in the second before Castlemaine found another via stalwart John Watson.

However, the visitors had all the answers kicking another three before the break to lead by 66 points at half-time.

The Hawks kicked two more to open the third term before Magpie coach Michael Hartley grabbed one back. But the Hawks continued to pepper the goals kicking four more to lead by 95 points.

To their credit, Castlemaine lifted in the last term piling on another six goals to the tiring Hawks’ four to win the term. But the damage was done and the Magpies went down 65-144.

Best on ground were Hunter Staples, Callum McConachy, Joshua Eyre, Kalan Huntly, William Moran and John Watson.

The Reserves turned the tables recording a fantastic win over the Hawks 61-48. Best on ground in a terrific team performance were Bodhi Robinson, Aidan Medlyn, Archie Rixon, Aidan Douglas, Thomas Ford and Alton Bracken.

The Under 18s also had a magnificent win 70-18.

Best on ground were Saxon Sieber-Hogg, Chaz Holman, Cooper Mark, Tadgh Cananzi, Benjamin Jardine, and Gabriel O’Sullivan.

Netball

On the netball court A Reserve lost 38-59 in a valiant team effort. Best on was Sarah McLean.

B Grade lost a tough clash 21-57. Best on was Charley Pedretti.

B Reserve lost 24-55 despite a great team effort.

The 17 and Under Girls held on to win 28-23 in a low scoring affair. Sianne Rhone was named best on.

The Magpie Women enjoyed another week’s rest courtesy of the bye.

This Saturday in the Indigenous Round, the Magpie sides hit the road to tackle Strathfieldsaye Storm at Tannery Lane in round seven action. The Magpie Women will take on Golden Square at Wade Street on Sunday from 1pm.
