Dancing in your 60s and beyond

What began as a simple idea between two local dance teachers has grown into one of the week’s highlights for many older residents.

Designed for older adults, Dance for Wellbeing 60+ is a combination of uplifting music, stretching and dance phrases.

Following the enthusiastic response to their Castlemaine classes, dance teachers, Edna Reinhardt and Heidi Barrett are now bringing the call to Kyneton starting on Tuesday August 4.

Edna said the classes are designed to support social connection, mental well-being, balance, coordination, and memory through learning short, accessible and enjoyable dance phrases.

“Participants are loving the music and enjoying our teaching style,” Edna said.

“At this time of year, when many people become less active, the classes also provide a joyful reason to keep moving through the winter months, with all the physical and emotional benefits that brings.

Heidi said that everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace, listen to their bodies, and the emphasis is on having fun over getting the steps ‘right’.

“And every class also finishes with a dance party track, where everyone lets loose to a well-loved classic, singing along, getting the blood pumping and leaving with a smile,” she said.

“One of our regulars came up to us after class recently and told us that when she wakes up in the morning her body is no longer sore. Hearing this made my day.”

Dance for Wellbeing 60+ Kyneton course begins Tuesday August 4, from 10.30am to 11.15am, at St Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, 26–28 Yaldwyn Street West, Kyneton.
