The Kyneton Women’s Football Club has less than a month to save their 2026 season after AFL Victoria upheld an appeal to block the club from competing in any affiliated league.
KWFC was formed in late 2024 after more than 30 players walked away from the Kyneton Football Netball Club amid claims of inequitable treatment and disrespect.
In 2025, KWFC joined forces with Gisborne FNC to compete as a hybrid team – going undefeated and winning the premiership in the Essendon District Football League. Since then, the club has built a strong membership base, secured volunteers and sponsors, and been recognised with the Award for Contribution to Sport in the Macedon Ranges.
Despite meeting all participation requirements and being unanimously accepted by the Central Victoria Football League, AFL Victoria upheld an appeal by the Riddell District Football Netball League – which had previously rejected KWFC and told the club to “seek opportunities elsewhere”. The decision was made behind closed doors, without KWFC being given a chance to respond.
“We were forced to leave our old club because it was unsafe and unsupportive,” player Charlie Bracey said.
“Now, after doing everything right, we’re being shut out – and the clock is ticking.”
KWFC has launched a public petition calling on AFL Victoria to approve the club’s 2026 affiliation and urging the AFL to exercise its oversight role to ensure women and girls can play safely and fairly.
“There is a league ready to take us and a team ready to play,” another player, Rebecca Evans said. “The only thing stopping us is a single decision.”
Without action in the next 30 days, players risk losing a second consecutive season, and a ready, award-winning women’s club will be sidelined entirely.
The club is calling for:
• A place to play in 2026 as the Kyneton Women’s Football Club
• Consistent and accountable decision-making
• Equal treatment of women’s teams as essential
• Independent safety and integrity systems
“This isn’t just about one club,” the group said. “It’s about who gets to play – and who gets to decide.”
