World Cup kicks off

Hundreds of football fans turned up to Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club's screening of the World Cup at the Goods Shed on Sunday.

Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club hosted a World Cup live screening at The Goods Shed on Sunday.

More than 300 fans, young and old, went along to watch the Socceroos overcome Turkiye 2:0 in an enthralling game.

The club organised the live site to celebrate the amazing opportunity to bring the local football-loving community together to watch the first game for Australia in their 2026 World Cup campaign.

The Castlemaine Rotary Club and the Goods Shed were amazing supporters of the event.

Open to everyone, the event is just another way the club is bringing the community together to celebrate the love of football in Castlemaine. With both the men’s and women’s national teams succeeding at respective World Cups, the club is celebrating on and off the pitch as local player registrations at CGFC continue to grow after each international tournament!

Hannes McNamara, CGFC vice president, said it was a wonderful way to showcase what is possible for their players.

“After today, we’re sure there are a few of our junior players dreaming of their chance to represent Australia one day,” he said.

Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club currently has 160 Miniroos players, 23 junior teams (including nine girls teams) and five senior teams (including two women’s teams).

“It’s great to see the local football-mad community come out in droves to support our international teams,” Hannes said.

“A huge thanks to all our volunteers who made the day possible, and to both Rotary for the BBQ and the Goods Shed for hosting us.”

Stay tuned for announcements regarding future screenings as the Socceroos 2026 World Cup campaign continues.
