There was plenty to like about the way Kyneton and Riddell senior footballers won their ninth-round matches on Saturday — now these two sides clash at Bomberland in the match of the round this weekend.
Kyneton’s playing coach Ethan Foreman turned back the clock by kicking nine goals against Gisborne Giants as his side piled on 20.14 (134) to outclass the Giants 10.7 (67) at the Macedon Regional Sports Precinct.
Reigning premiers Riddell, gradually building up towards peak form as the season progresses, restricted Melton Centrals to a miserable five points in second half of a low scoring contest which ended with a 10.13 (73) to 4.9 (33) scoreline.
Riddell had evergreen Matt Pannucio in vintage form, and tall ruckman Mark Kovacevic showed why he is rated as one of the recruits of the season.
The Bombers are third on the ladder, and Kyneton fourth, but the Tigers have a much superior percentage of 170.22 per cent.
Kyneton won 20.14 (134) to 10.7 (67) against the Giants, with consistent ball winner Caleb Fisher, Foreman and Isaac Barassi among the Tigers’ best in the lead-up to the clash with Riddell.
Blake Tirchett, captain Brad Mangan and Matt Quigley were prominent for the Giants.
Unbeaten ladder leader Wallan took control in the second term against Romsey, and were eight goals clear at the last change.
To their credit, the Redbacks fought the game right out with four goals in the last quarter while keeping the Magpies to a solitary point.
Wallan, with six goals from Lachlan Smart, won 13.13 (91) to 9.14 (68).
Once again a very consistent Jack Jedwab set a fine example with five goals for Romsey.
There are several players right in the race to be the top goalkicker this season.
Yet to break the ice, Lancefield battled hard against a formidable Diggers Rest line-up, being contained to one goal in the first half.
Final scores were 23.15 (153) to 4.8 (32) with the second-placed Burras having plenty of flexibility as they try to discover their strongest possible side for a tilt at the premiership.
In the Under 19.5s, the battle between the top two sides resulted in a 5.12 (42) to 3.5 (23) for the Giants over Kyneton.
