Witnesses were horrified at the scene of a car ploughing into a flock of geese, killing and injuring many, at Malmsbury last Thursday evening.
About five of the geese were killed instantly and two were left injured on the road. Witnesses say the driver of the car made no attempt to stop, slow down or render assistance at the scene.
Good Samaritans who stopped to assist the geese phoned McIntyre Vets at Kyneton for advice and brought the two injured geese to the clinic for assessment.
Dr Greg McIntyre thanked the Good Samaritans for their quick thinking and assistance.
“Our staff stayed back on their own time to assist. They were very distressed by what they discovered,” he told the Express.
The team took x-rays to assess the injuries. One of the geese had head injuries. Both stayed at the clinic overnight and, following checks with experienced wildlife vets, have since been released to the Malmsbury Botanical Gardens.
“We’re very proud of our staff for assisting the geese. It’s sad that this has happened. The geese are an institution at Malmsbury and no doubt the community is pretty upset about this incident,” Dr McIntyre said.
“We’re grateful to the members of the public who brought the geese in for care and grateful that they made donations to contribute to their care.”
McIntyre Vets has a dedicated wildlife fund for donations to assist wild animals and animals without owners that are in need of care.
Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Kyneton police.
