Malmsbury Cricket Club’s Division One side was in red hot form in the Gisborne District Cricket Association’s latest round against Riddell.
North Grade were outplayed by Trentham, while the Under 17s posted 102 in their two-day game with Sunbury.
Division one
Malmsbury 7/300 d Riddell 10/104
Reverted to a one-day match after last week was washed out, The Berrie boys put on a clinic for the small crowd at the MCG.
The Bombers won the toss and asked the locals to take first use of the Home Grown Local Hero, Laurie Frizz Marshall’s superbly prepared track.
Openers Leon Cox 105, and Chris Ganim 63 belted the ball everywhere on their way to a 187 first wicket stand. A brilliant ton from Leon, his first for the season, was mostly boundaries. The pressure on the hapless Bombers didn’t ease up any as the following batsmen got in on the act. 47 not out from JD Singh was a measured knock, while Dave Nolte 24, Matt Cox 23 and Palmy Singh 18, were all excellent contributors toward the end of the innings.
Mark Lindsay was Riddell’s best bowler taking 2/21.
Three hundred was always going to be difficult, and almost impossible after Kyle Fisher took the first wicket with his third ball of the innings. Travis Wadden was the only Riddell batsman to put up any kind of resistance, making 31 not out, but wickets fell at regular intervals until the Bombers were all out in just 26 overs.
Bowling rewards were shared with Kyle Fisher 3/33, Leon Cox 2/10, and Simon Rogers, Palmy Singh, Dan Turner, and Guy Nelson, yes, Guy Nelson all picked up a single wicket each.
North Grade
Trentham 8/162 d Malmsbury 10/104
Another two-week match turned into a one-dayer after last week’s washout. Winning the toss and batting first at home, The Saints, largely through opener Rory Healy 49 and Chris Boyer 35, posted a very good score. Despite losing wickets cheaply toward the end of the innings, the Saints batted out their allotted 35 overs.
Nathan Fisher was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/27, while Jock Braszell 2/8, and one each to Gavin Marshall, Jake Sundblom, and Tenzin de Podolinsky.
Malmsbury never got going in the run chase, losing the top order for not much.
At 6/29 a victory was most unlikely. Jock Braszell’s 31 not out from the middle order showed deviance, while Steve Tautkus chimed in with 16. Unfortunately that was that.
Jake Sartori and John Cowell took three wicket hauls.
Under 17s
Malmsbury 9/102 v Sunbury
Malmsbury batted first at the MCG in their two-day encounter with Sunbury.
It was a bleak start, but with Rilke de Podolinsky 20, Jock Braszell 18, Ciaran Gardner and Faolan Gardner 14, and Adam Donnelly 13, the boys are not without a chance come next week. John Petrivic was the pick of the bowlers claiming three wickets.
Local hero
Laurie ‘Frizza’ Marshall has won the Channel 7 P&O Home Grown Local Hero Competition.
During the Big Bash season, a Local Cricket Hero has featured at each game.
On Saturday Frizza was announced the winner of the competition for his tireless work at the Malmsbury Cricket Ground.
The 83-year-old Frizza is a truly dedicated voluntary groundsman who has been rolling up a turf wicket at Malmsbury for 43 years. His prize includes a 10-day P&O cruise with cash to splash, while the nominator and club have been well looked after.
