Lancefield girls’ footy groundbreaker

Lancefield Junior Football Netball Club is proud to announce the launch of the first ever girls’ football sides in 2021.
Club president Bill Balcam said there were many new families moving into the district and it was time to be positive and provide footy opportunities for young girls.
In an ambitious move, the club hopes to have Under 13, U15 and U18 girls’ teams this season – the clincher will be sufficient numbers showing interest to be involved.
Jacqui Green has been appointed at the girls’ footy coordinator and is keen to see the move be successful.
A Lancefield resident, Jacqui has been coordinator with the Gisborne Rookies for the past three years, and can see the host of benefits for teenagers taking up the sport.
It’s not all about winning premierships!
“I’m truly grateful the LJFNC committee is passionate about getting Girls’ Footy off the ground.
“The club is set to establish a fresh new sporting opportunity for our local girls to learn, grow and develop a football skill set in a fun, family team environment,” Jacqui explained.
“This will provide a pathway for girls from Auskick to youth, senior and even to the surging AFLW. (Remember how Maddie Presparkis began at a very young age in junior footy in Romsey, and is now a super star with Carlton in the AFLW).

Keen and ready to go: from left – Sienna Green, Tahnee Potts, Hayley Bird and Jas Elder are training at Lancefield hoping the local club finally has girls’ football teams this season.

This season neighbouring Romsey does not have girls’ teams, and Lancefield hopes to draw numbers from Romsey and other areas to bring diversity and a new dynamic to the club.
Jacqui summed up some of the advantages for local girls becoming involved:
Create new opportunities to meet new friends, socialise and build connections; provide a safe family environment for local girls to learn a new skill set.
Provide access to mentors and role models. Build confidence!
Encourage all fitness levels, size and body shapes — everyone can play football; no football or sporting experience necessary.

Sienna Green is a football enthused teenager who is keen to play with the first-ever Lancefield girls’ football teams this coming season. Sienna, a very talented dual premiership player with Gisborne Rookies, hopes many more girls will come forward and ensure the Lancefield Tigers are trailblazers in the Riddell League’s competition.
