For the Collier family of Kyneton, the Agricultural Show isn’t just a date on the calendar – it’s a family tradition that’s spanned nearly 30 years and now three generations.
It all began in the mid-1990s when Sarah and Ross Collier’s daughter, Steph, and youngest son, Andrew, first entered the pavilion competitions with home baking.
Cakes, scones, biscuits and slices filled their kitchen in the lead-up to Show Day – beginning a family connection with the Kyneton Show that has never waned.
Fast forward to today, and the next generation has proudly taken up the mantle.
Andrew’s young son Angus, who is not yet eight, entered his handiwork in the Open Craft Under 8 Years section at last year’s show – and walked away with first place. His beaming smile on judging day was one of the highlights of the pavilion.
“Angus was so proud,” Sarah said.
“It’s lovely to see him getting involved and enjoying it, just like we did when we started.”
Sarah herself is a regular entrant, last year showcasing her raspberry jam, while her husband, Ross, has recently joined the friendly competition too, entering his homemade salami and honey. His salami earned a third place in what’s become one of the more fiercely contested local sections.
For the Colliers, the Kyneton Show is about more than prizes – it’s about connection.
“It’s something we do together,” Sarah said.
“We love seeing everyone’s creativity and effort on display. It brings the whole community together.”
Their story is one of the many that make the Kyneton Agricultural Show such a cherished event. From handcrafts to homemade preserves, the show continues to celebrate the best of local talent and the simple joy of getting involved.
As the 163rd Kyneton Show approaches, starting with the Carnival Night on Friday November 14, 5.30-10pm and continuing on Saturday Show Day November 15, 9am – 4pm, the Collier family are once again preparing their entries – a proud reminder that tradition, talent and community spirit are alive and well in Kyneton.
