One of Castlemaine’s latest imports, hip hop artist Dallas Woods, performed his new single If it glitters it’s gold with his Castlemaine band live on ABC TV’s new show ‘The Sound’ on Sunday afternoon.
The episode was filmed at the iconic Castlemaine Rod Shop.
The Sound puts live Australian music back on free-to-air TV. Each episode, created by Mushroom Vision and licensed to the ABC, features exclusive performances, collaborations and interviews from some of our nation’s finest talent – with two-thirds of the program showcasing new material.
Episode Three saw Dallas join host Jane Gazzo, music news correspondent Zan Rowe and very special guest co-host – former Skyhooks guitarist and radio/TV legend Red Symons.
Dallas is a Noongar man raised in the east Kimberley but now calls Castlemaine home. He’s performed at Australia’s biggest festivals like Splendour in the Grass, Blues Fest and Groovin The Moo.
The rapper, who has been making a name for himself collaborating with Baker Boy and Jerome Farah, is a star on the rise.
After spending much of 2019 touring alongside and writing music with his close offsider Baker Boy, Dallas is ready to unveil new music of his own.
The first single in his armoury, If It Glitters It’s Gold, was crafted together with his frequent collaborator Jerome Farrah (the co-producer of runaway Kian hit Waiting).
Dallas says it’s a track that reflects on his rapid ascent in the music industry and calls bullshit on the illusion of glitz, glamour and success.
“We live in a world where we’re told ‘bigger is better’ and every day is a reminder of just how much we want to outdo the person next to us,” Dallas says.
“I’ve been guilty of that too. I wanted to be as big, if not bigger, than people who inspire or paved the way for my journey. But that goes against my morals. And in doing that I realised just how much energy it takes to maintain an ego,” he says.
The latest episode also featured performances by one of the brightest pop talents to emerge in recent years Amy Shark; West Australian multi-APRA and ARIA award-winner John Butler; Indie folk-rockers Boy & Bear; global pop powerhouse Sheppard; Melbourne vocalist Angie McMahon; and Gordi gave the audience a taste of her deeply personal, just-released Top 20 ARIA album Our Two Skins.
Each week, The Sound’s ‘Introducing’ segment also showcases an impressive emerging talent and this week featured young indigenous singer/songwriter Scott Darlow.
If you missed Dallas’ new single don’t despair the episode will be repeated this Saturday August 11 at 12.30pm on ABC or you can catch it on ABC iView.
