Residents on Edgecombe Road at Kyneton are calling for safety improvements to a notorious intersection following a frightening collision between a truck and a car last Friday morning.
A 40-year-old Kyneton woman was attempting to turn right into Melville Drive about 9.15am when a truck travelling behind her collided with her vehicle, causing it to crash into a power pole and trapping her inside the wreckage.
She sustained non-life threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital in a stable condition but local residents say it’s only a matter of time before a crash like this one claims a life.
Brian Wilson is one resident who has long called for safety improvements at the intersection, which is the main entrance to the Kyneton Bushland Resort that can service up to 300 holidaymakers at any given time.
He said residents wanted a dedicated turning lane into Melville Drive and a reduction in the speed limit along that section of road.
“We’ve had a number of very serious accidents that could have easily been fatalities and almost every day there are near misses,” Mr Wilson said.
“We shouldn’t have to wait until somebody dies for this serious issue to be given priority.
“There is an urgent need for an independent safety audit to be carried out.”
Regional Roads Victoria’s acting director northern region, Barry Green, said RRV’s road safety experts were constantly monitoring the entire network, including this section of Edgecombe Road.
“Our thoughts are with the people involved in this terrible crash,” Mr Green said.
“We’ll be working closely with local police to better understand the circumstances of this crash and to see if any safety improvements are required.”
