Trade takes new shape

Squishie Minnie Bookstore is offering online storytime to encourage a different type of social connection.

Trade is taking new shape for many innovative local businesses adapting to COVID-19 precautions.
Drive-through options, online platforms and extra delivery services are helping locals adhere to spatial distancing and assuring the region is still open for business.
Malmsbury Hotel owner Anda Gazzard said it was important for local businesses to adapt as needs and circumstances changed.
“We’re aware that people are taking extra precautions and we want to make sure we have options for those who don’t want close contact,” Ms Gazzard said.
The establishment has introduced a drive-through service that allows people to order and pay for pub meals by phone, then pick up orders at the drive-through bottle shop without leaving their vehicle.
The business is also working to develop a home-delivery meal service for those not mobile, self-isolating or seeking extra support.
Various local businesses have employed extra precautions and have put calls out on social media for people to continue supporting local trade.
Kyneton’s Squishy Minnie Bookstore may have moved to online sales to limit personal contact but shutting shop hasn’t stopped its popular children’s storytime, which moved to an online platform last week.
Squishy Minnie’s Kristen Proud said it was important to raise morale and keep people connected.
“Our first storytime was a hit!” she said.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with private messages showing kids dancing and listening.
“People are saying it’s made their day lighter, which is exactly what we hoped for.
“We know how important it is to keep our community connected in whatever ways possible. We also appreciate how strange a time it is and so hopefully this continues some sort of normalcy for people.⁣”
Online storytime will continue while the shop is closed along with online book clubs. ⁣⁣The store is also offering free delivery for online purchases across the Macedon Ranges, Trentham and Daylesford.
