Equipment upgrades for Dhelkaya Health

L-R: Dhelkaya board chair Vanessa Healy, Dhelkaya CEO Sue Race, Castlemaine Hospital nurse unit manager Miriam Van Edgmond and Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards.

Castlemaine Hospital operating theatre equipment and aged care facilities at Maldon Hospital and Ellery House will undergo upgrades.

Dhelkaya Health has been awarded more than $1.9 million in funding through the state government’s Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

The health service had identified several pieces of equipment that reached ‘end of life’, regularly breaking down and impacting patient services and theatre productivity.

Operating theatre upgrades will involve replacing sterilising and clinical equipment, helping to reduce planned surgery wait lists.

Ellery House and Maldon Hospital funds will replace unreliable and out-of-date ceiling hoists.

Dhelkaya Health Board Chair Vanessa Healy said the hospital had two theatres operating almost full time.

“It’s amazing to be able to provide this level of care,” Ms Healy said.

“The money will assist us to upgrade hospital equipment and purchase hoists and systems for Ellery House and Maldon Hospital, which will help mobilise patients and minimise staff injuries.”

Announcing the funding last week, Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards said the boost would help deliver better health infrastructure for locals in Castlemaine and the surrounding region.

“The staff here do a remarkable job and these equipment upgrades will also ensure our hardworking staff have safer and more efficient facilities to continue delivering the world-class care our community is so grateful for,” she said.
