Dozens of free veggie seed starter packs are helping Macedon Ranges locals to become self-sufficient.
The seed packs will improve the home-grown food supply and it’s just the beginning for the Woodend Seed Library, says its creator Kylie Swain.
“Everyone has gone crazy for gardening and I think it’s amazing,” she said.
The Woodend local has noticed a resurgence in home gardening as people look to ways they can become less reliant on supermarkets.
“Sourcing food has been difficult for some people over the past few weeks during the coronavirus pandemic and people have thought about what they can do in their own backyard,” she said.
“There is so much that people in the Macedon Ranges can grow at this time and it is also giving families something to do at home during the school holidays.”
Ms Swain launched the seed library earlier this month to allow people free access to a variety of seeds and foster a love of gardening.
As part of its opening she has distributed about 150 veggie seed starter packs to those seeking to begin or improve on their home-grown food supply, but the seed library is about more than just food. It will give locals access to a range of seeds for flowers, trees, shrubs and much more.
As the seed library community grows, Ms Swain hopes to host regular community events and talks to share tips and ideas for the garden.
Ms Swain says the drop-off and pick-up points at the library won’t be used as COVID-19 precautions step up but she is working on new ways to get seeds to people and will keep the community informed via social media.
Green thumbs are encouraged to join the online community and share their garden success.
