Ring in the new year with free travel

V/Line travel within Victoria is free tonight.

Metropolitan and regional trains, trams and buses will be free from 6pm tonight until 6am on New Year’s Day.

V/Line travel within Victoria will also be free as well as on long-distance services arriving in Melbourne after 6pm New Year’s Eve.

Free travel extends to the first V/Line service from Melbourne to any Victorian destination on New Year’s Day.

Passengers do not need to travel with a valid myki during periods of free travel and passengers with a myki do not need to touch on as metropolitan ticket barriers will be open at all stations.

Passengers travelling on long-distance V/Line services are encouraged to book ahead and will be issued with a ticket free of charge.

Metropolitan trains and trams (except routes 78 and 82) will run all night, to help you travel to your New Year’s Eve event and back again.

The City of Melbourne will have five pre-booked celebration zones at Alexandra Gardens, Treasury Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens, Docklands and the New Year’s Street Feast.

To help you get there, a normal weekday public transport timetable will be in place between 6pm and midnight on New Year’s Eve, with additional services after midnight.

Metropolitan trains will run to a 15-minute frequency between midnight and 1am, a 30-minute frequency between 1am and 2am, and every hour from 2am.

On the tram network, most services will operate all night – running to a 15 to 20-minute frequency between midnight and 2am, and every 60 minutes from 2am.

The newly expanded Night Network bus service will also run all night, with 34 routes helping Melbourne residents get to within 1km of a train, tram, bus or coach overnight service to help them get around.

City Loop stations will close at 2am on New Year’s Eve, with all train services after that time departing from Flinders Street.
Most services will be running to a Saturday timetable on New Year’s Day.

Passengers must wear a face mask on public transport and when travelling in taxis or ride-share vehicles.

On New Year’s Eve there will be some road closures in the CBD including the Princess Bridge, which will be closed to traffic and trams between 8pm and 1am from Flinders Street to Hamer Hall (St Kilda Road).

Real-time traffic conditions are available at traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au or via the VicTraffic mobile app.
