Scott Trezise admits he’s “a bit old to be making a debut” in boxing but he’s proving age is just a number.
The 53-year-old is also stepping into the ring for a cause close to his heart: mental health awareness and support.
His first professional fight on March 19 will help raise funds for Lachy’s Reach – a Macedon Ranges based charity connecting youth with mental health support.
Scott will face off with swimmer and athlete John Van Wisse in his first taste as a professional for Ellis Gym. It follows Scott’s amateur boxing ‘pretender to contender’ Big Fight Night win last April.
“I’m a bit nervous. More excited than anything, but the outcome isn’t the purpose of the fight,” he told the Express.
“It’s really about putting yourself out of your comfort zone and showing that anyone can do anything.
“Pushing awareness for mental health is also a big passion of mine. I’ve battled my own demons and understand that it’s a bumpy road. If I can help people see that others have faced similar challenges, they know they are not alone and they can reach out.”
Scott was the driving force behind the Riddell v Macedon PukaUp Cup to raise mental health awareness after the football clubs each lost a member to suicide.
He said the loss of young players Tanner Bell (Riddell) and Lachy Jorgensen (Macedon) sent shockwaves through both clubs and the community.
“It shook the clubs to the core,” he said.
Lachy’s mother Mel has been a strong advocate for mental health services. She established Lachy’s Reach in her son’s memory following several successful Laps for Lachy fundraising events.
Mel referred to Scott as a mental health warrior and said she was “very grateful for his continued support and fundraising”.
The fight, to be held in Melbourne, is expected to attract a crowd of about 3000 people.
A percentage of the fight ticket and table sales will go to Lachy’s Reach, as well as profits from the sales of t-shirts.
Those interested in securing a seat for the fight or purchasing a t-shirt ($30) can call: 0402 097 867. Donations can also made directly to Lachy’s Reach.
