Castlemaine Documentary Festival will screen The Disappearance of Shere Hite at the Theatre Royal in March.
Shere Hite’s 1976 ground-breaking study of the intimate experiences of women, The Hite Report, remains one of the bestselling books of all time.

The book challenged restrictive conceptions of sex and opened a dialogue in popular culture around women’s pleasure. But few remember Shere Hite today. What led to her erasure?
Who was Shere Hite? Come and find out at one of the March film screenings.
Rediscover a second-wave feminist pioneer who continues to have an unmistakable influence on conversations about gender, sexuality and bodily autonomy, in a perceptive tale of fearless feminist activism, backlash, and a legacy that demands to be preserved.
For The Disappearance of Shere Hite, filmmaker Nicole Newnham delved into exclusive archives as well as Hite’s personal journals, and the original survey responses that informed The Hite Report.
The film transports audiences back to a time of unprecedented societal transformation around sexuality, reinstating Hite’s significance and underscoring her ongoing relevance.
The film will show at the Theatre Royal on the eve of International Women’s Day on March 7, at 7.30pm and also on Saturday March 9 at 1.30pm.
