Futsal is a sport growing in leaps and bounds in the Macedon Ranges.
This modified form of soccer, traditionally played indoors, is growing in popularity with more than 450 players of all ages from under eight years old, all the way through to open-age players.
Macedon Ranges Futsal has in recent seasons had many of its players represent at state, national and international levels.
However, it is not just the players who have gained recognition. The referee program run through the MRF is a prime example of how sporting organisations can contribute back to the community and its youth.
MRF referees, who must be more than 13 years of age, are provided with an opportunity to work as a team, support each other and develop through various stages of competence.
The senior referee’s role requires the ability to coach other referees from beginner level through to a higher degree of refereeing competence.
All referees contribute to the ongoing training and development and it is the referees themselves that meet regularly to review performance and provide feedback. The senior referees alongside the coordinator are also responsible for acknowledging each referees growth and development.
“This model fosters independence, responsibility and leadership,” said the MRF’s Holly Pitt.
“They work as a team to referee the competitions with minimal supervision. Senior referees aim to provide a learning environment and culture that is positive and rewarding.
“Perhaps what has been most noticeable to the parents and members of MRF is the patience and maturity shown by the referees to the younger and newest members.
“Macedon Ranges Futsal referees not only ref the game but are taking the time to guide these young players and foster a love and passion for sport.”
Holly said MRF has had a significant increase in female referees and overall interest in refereeing. The program facilitates positive youth development of leadership and organisational skills in our youth as they discover and gain confidence and take up greater responsibility.
