Redbacks have work to do

Plenty of action: Romsey and Rockbank players battle for the ball late in the last quarter.

Overall Romsey played just 50 minutes of solid football to defeat Western Rams by 66 points on Saturday, coach Paul Kennedy said after the match.

While the coach, and Redbacks’ supporters, could be pleased with the second half, they were not thrilled with what they saw in the first half as the Rams showed plenty of ability and tenacity to restrict scoring and keep the home side under pressure.

“There’s a lot of work to do,” Kennedy said, hinting strongly there was scope for more intensive practise this week in the lead-up to the big match against Diggers Rest.

Captain Nathan Blair was ultra-consistent, and more space in the forward line, with Jack Jedwab contributing five goals, made supporters happier.

Romsey 2.3, 4.6,11.9, 14.12 (96) d Western Rams 1.2, 3.3, 4.3, .6 (30).
Goals (Rom) – J. Jedwab 5, D. Walsh 3, J. Carroll, C. Pertzel 2, N. Blair, N. Hoy.
Best – Blair, M. Tinkler, Jedwab, Walsh, Pertzel, M. Adamson.

In the only other senior match in the RDFNL on Saturday, Wallan thrashed Melton Centrals 29.14 (188) to 4.7 (31).
Ace forward Matt Perri kicked 10 goals, and elusive Corey Grindlay eight in a tune up for this weekend’s clash with unbeaten Riddell.
