Almighty Will was the flag bearer for Liam Howley Racing when the Macedon Ranges thoroughbred enterprise began several years ago.

The Kyneton-based trainer, with a large modern complex at Pipers Creek, describes six-year-old Almighty Will as “tough, consistent and much-loved”.

After running second at Pakenham on July 28, Almighty Will gave Howley his first winner for the new racing season season at Sale on Thursday.

The long trip paid dividends when the honest six-year-old, a $4.80 chance, was ridden well back in the field in the 1415m Happy Birthday Steve Harrap BM64 Handicap.

Billy Egan hooked Almighty Will wide and he finished strongly to defeat topweight Legionaire by 0.2 lengths.

This was the winner’s sixth success from 33 starts, and took his career earnings to $137,500.

Howley is thinking ahead to Spring Racing with some other well-credentialled gallopers in the local stables.

At the Inglis Easter Sale, Howley secured three very well bred yearlings, with an eye to longer term success at a high level.
