Gisborne midweek champions

Jubilant: Gisborne's division 1 midweek premiership side pictured after the grand final victory against Kyneton.

After scraping home by two shots in the Highlands midweek bowls second semi-final, Gisborne stepped up the pressure to convincing win the division 1 grand final last week.

Kyneton Golf hosted the division 1 and 2 grand finals in fine conditions, and the division 1 premiership tussle opened with Kyneton playing well to open up a handy lead.

Not to be denied, Gisborne gradually took control and eventually secured a 22-shot victory (73-51).

The Tim Rogers and Alan Higgins fours played very well, while Ant Mathison’s Kyneton four won by five shots to prevent a clean sweep defeat.

With a strong record over the years in midweek bowls, Gisborne hope to defeat the Ballarat mid-week premiers at Woodend today (Tuesday) and advance further this season.

Gisborne team manager Ethan Higgins was pleased to accept the premiership shield, and club president Russell Walker OAM was delighted with the team’s performance this season.

Higgins, a high class bowler, has been sidelined through injury for quite some time, and there are high hopes he can be back in action next season.
