Campbells Creek Magpies break the drought

The Campbells Creek Seniors celebrate their win Saturday.

Campbells Creek Football Netball Club is flying high after recording a long-awaited win against the Avoca Bulldogs on Saturday.

The win is the first for the Magpies Seniors since July 2022.

And what a win it was, one goal in front, with seconds remaining!

The historic club sent a massive congratulations out to its players, coaching staff, officials, volunteers, supporters, family, friends and sponsors who have stuck with them during a challenging rebuilding period.

The club came close to breaking the drought last week when they went down to Lexton by 13 points in a thriller and supporters felt an elusive victory was just around the corner.

On Saturday at Avoca Public Reserve, Creek got out to an early lead in the opening term kicking two goals to the Bulldogs’ one and smashed on another four in the second term to extend their advantage to 23 points at half-time.

The Bulldogs lifted in the third term kicking three goals, but the Magpies answered with three of their own to remain 23 points ahead at the final change.

Avoca threw everything they had at the Magpies in the final term kicking 3.3, while holding the visitors to four points to win the term. However, the Magpies held on to win the match by one straight kick.

Best for the Magpies in a great team effort were Isaac Fletcher, Judd Stevens, James Martinovic, Jake Leslie, Tyson Williams and Daniel Klimeck.

Harcourt journeyed to Navarre to take on the Grasshoppers and recorded a win.

The Lions were on top early and led by 13 points at half-time.

Best were Baxter Gurd 3, Thomas Walters, Mark Noonan, Jordan Gartside, Alex Code and Josh Taig.

Newstead played host to Natte Bealiba in a massive day of football and netball action that was capped off with the Senior sides playing under lights.

The two sides were evenly matched in the first half and only 10 points separated the teams at half-time, the Roos holding an edge.

But there was a shift in the second half with Newstead lifting to a whole new level and kicking another 10 goals to four to run out victors by 55 points.

Best for the Steaders were William Moran, Adam Hunter, Liam O’Brien, Ethan Maltby, Lachlan O’Brien and Nicholas Lord.

Trentham made the trek to Hedges Oval to face off against the Maryborough Giants.

The Saints blasted out of the blocks with a nine-goal-to-zero opening term to leave the Giants reeling. But to their credit the Borough dusted themselves off and recovered strongly kicking five goals to three in the second term.

At half-time Trentham led by 48 points.

The sides kicked four goals apiece in the third term, but the final term saw the Saints run over the top of the Borough with six goals to one. The Saints cruising to a 78-point win.

Best for the Saints were James Regan with an impressive nine goals, Jye Adamson, Joel Cowan, Joel Dovaston, Harrison Knight and Marcus Elderfield.

Maldon welcomed Carisbrook to the Bill Woodfull Reserve.

The Redbacks jumped out to an early lead despite the valiant efforts of the Dons defence and led by 32 points at quarter-time.

Carisbrook continued to work hard to make the most of their opportunities in the second and third terms kicking 15 goals to hold a 117-point buffer by the final change.

Maldon never bowed their heads and managed two late goals in the final term but the Brook eventually won by 129 points.
