“Now, we’re excited to begin an exciting new chapter in the Ballarat Football Netball League.”
This was Gisborne Football Netball Club’s reaction to AFL Victoria approving the Bulldogs’ application to switch from Bendigo League to Ballarat League, from the beginning of the 2027 season.
Last week’s Express reported the Bendigo FNL had approved Gisborne’s transfer, and AFL Victoria’s approval followed quickly.
This change of heart comes after less than 12 months ago, Gisborne was blocked from leaving Bendigo by AFL Victoria because of “negative impacts”. Bendigo FNL fought then to retain the Bulldogs as well.
Since that frustration for Gisborne, much has happened, including a change in the composition of Bendigo’s board of management.
The Gisborne club has a long and successful history, outgrowing the Riddell League and transferring to the major league (Bendigo) some 20 years ago.
The Bulldogs said the decision in favour of them going to Ballarat represents an exciting milestone for the club, being one which reflects its long-term vision for a strong and sustainable future.
From energetic president Tony Brancatisano down, the Bulldogs finally know where their future lies, and can plan accordingly.
They also have a commitment to Bendigo for the remainder of 2026, with premierships prospects alive in both football (seniors) and netball.
“We sincerely thank the Bendigo and Ballarat Football Netball Leagues for the respectful and professional way this process has been conducted.
“We also thank our members, volunteers, sponsors and supporters for their patience and support throughout the journey,” the club stated.
“We’re very proud of our years in the Bendigo League and the friendships and memories we’ve made along the way.”
Ballarat League General Manager Gemma Murphy said the league was pleased the process has been formally completed with Gisborne crossing next season.
Murphy said Gisborne’s addition marks an exciting milestone for Ballarat League, and reflects the continued strength and growth of community football and netball across the region.
“Throughout this process, our focus has been on following the appropriate governance framework and ensuring all requirements under the AFL Victoria Community Affiliate Regulations were met.
“We appreciate the co-operation of AFL Victoria and the Bendigo Football Netball League in facilitating the process.”
Ballarat also acknowledged the support of its member clubs who voted in favour of Gisborne joining the league at a special general meeting earlier this month.
Over the coming months, Ballarat League looks closely to working with Gisborne for a smooth transition.
The changing geographic situation, and benefits in recruitment and retention, were important factors in Gisborne pressing to join Ballarat. Strong members’ votes to leave Bendigo also made the board of management determined to follow the issue through.
