After four one-day rounds, Gisborne District Cricket Association reverts to two-day matches in McIntyre Cups 1sts in round five beginning this Saturday.
The level of interest must surely be centred on the Gisborne versus Woodend encounter — this is effectively a replay of last season’s grand final, where playing time was lost and the Woodsmen emerged as premiers largely due to finishing on top of the ladder.
Both these sides are unbeaten, but their form patterns this season are extremely different.
The Dragons have won their three matches easily, losing just five wickets in the process. The Woodsmen have also won three, but they have been fully extended and happy to get six points (One round was abandoned due to adverse weather).
Let’s hope both sides have two full days to show their worth at Gardiner Reserve over the next two Saturdays.
Now back to last Saturday, when GDCA clubs combined with the Black Dog Foundation to raise much-needed funds for men’s health.
At Gilbert Gordon Oval, Woodend multi-purpose attack restricted Sunbury United to 9/124 from 26 overs, with Hamish McDonald taking three wickets and Warren Else dismissing danger man Upul Fernando cheaply.
In reply, the Woodsmen’s top order failed to fire, apart from opener Harrison Sheahan who put his head down and made a crucial 49 runs to add to his two wickets. The target was reached in 23.2 overs with a tally of 6/128.
CURRAN HITS 86
Rupertswood gained an important victory over Wallan after the Magpies were bowled out for 152.
A hard-hitting 86 from Jordan Curran was a match-winning innings for Rupo, now third on the ladder.
The positive influence of Romsey skipper Ben Way and Gisborne’s in-form leader Jarryd Vernon was again on display.
These quality players are remarkable for their consistency.
Way scored an unbeaten 81 as his side chased down Macedon’s competitive 7/202 c.c. with three overs remaining. Chris Burkett’s run-a-ball 43 came at the right time.
At King’s Park in Seymour, the home side struggled to reach 8/123 c.c. against a persistent Gisborne attack.
Vernon hit an unbeaten half century as the Dragons won under the DLS system with the loss of just one wicket.
McIntyre Cup ladder: Gisborne 21 pts, Woodend 21, Rupertswood 15, Romsey 15, Eastern Hill 9, Sunbury United 9, Macedon 3, Wallan 3.
Heavy rain on Sunday led to the GDCA calling off all scheduled women’s cricket matches.
ROUND FIVE GAMES (Two-day)
Gisborne v Woodend.
Romsey v Wallan.
Sunbury United v Rupertswood.
Macedon v Eastern Hill.
In Johnstone Shield, Riddell came back to earth after a big win, being dismissed for just 95 by Broadford.
