There were scenes of celebration at Wade Street Oval on Friday evening when the Magpie Central Vic AFL Women’s team bested minor premiers Golden Square.
This was a significant match for the Castlemaine team and a special way to celebrate Indigenous Round on Dja Dja Wurrung Country.
It was a highly competitive game which saw the Pies put in 110 per cent to win at a close margin of 5.1 (31) to 4.5 (29).
Best players were Jemma Finning and Tia Davidge who played exceptionally against a very tough side.
Castlemaine Football Netball Club footballers and netballers were proud to line up against Golden Square again on Saturday in the Indigenous Round feature match at Wade Street Oval.
The day saw a moving Welcome to Country and Smoking ceremony before by representatives of the DJAARA organisation.
The Magpies and Bulldogs joined teams across the league in donning indigenous themed guernseys for the round.
It was also a special day for Magpie clubman Nic Woodman who played his 50th game for the club.
The Magpies started well in the opening term kicking two goals to the Bulldogs six for the quarter. However, the home side stamped their authority on the game in the second stanza kicking 10 goals to 1 to take a sizeable lead into the half-time break.
Castlemaine battled valiantly until the final siren but in the end the Bulldogs’ class shone through winning 33.11 (209) to Castlemaine 4.3 (27).
Best for the Magpies were Tommy Horne, Liam Wilkinson, Brendan Josey, Riley Pedretti, William Moran and Brodie Browne-Kerr.
