Chewton Film Society in partnership with Rural Australians for Refugees is presenting a fundraising event at the Chewton Senior Citizens Centre on Sunday June 19 to mark Australian Refugee Week (June 19-25).
Chewton Film Society president, Beverley Bloxham, said both organisations believed it was important for all Australians to support refugees who arrived in Australia seeking asylum from war-ravaged and poverty-stricken parts of the world.
“We fundamentally believe that Australia remains a lucky country and it is important for us to help those in need,” she said.
The evening will begin with two short films: a fun animated short and a thought-provoking video from Julian Burnside AO QC, followed by the main feature film Le Havre.
The 2011 comedy-drama film, produced, written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki and starring André Wilms, Kati Outinen, Jean-Pierre Darroussin and Blondin Miguel, tells the story of a shoe shiner who tries to save an illegal immigrant child in the French port city Le Havre.
After the screening, guests are invited to stay and enjoy supper, discuss the films and meet new people.
Doors open at 2.30pm for a 3pm start. The venue is located at 201 Main Road Chewton (car park access off Mount Street).
One hundred per cent of ticket sales will go directly to support refugees recently released from hotel detention in Melbourne. Tickets are $15 book at cfsrefugees.eventbrite.com
