Maldon played host to Campbells Creek in round three of the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League competition on Saturday.
In a tight first term the Dons got two goals on the board and held Creek to a solitary point to lead by 13 points at the first break.
Creek stepped up in second pegging a couple of much-needed goals, but Maldon found four in reply to hold a 25-point advantage at half-time.
The arm wrestle continued in the third with the Creek keeping Maldon to two goals, but they were unable to make the most of opportunities at the other end of the park only managing four points.
The Magpies wrested out another much-needed goal in the final term but Maldon powered home with five goals to win by a convincing 56 points.
Best for Maldon were Bailey Brown with three goals, Darcy Kelly and Ash Humphrey.
Best for Creek were Dylan Stevens, Lachlan Hyland and Mitchell Stevens.
In the other local match of the round Newstead welcomed Trentham.
The Saints were chasing their second win after a great performance against Dunolly, while the Steaders were looking to bounce back and secure their second win after a second round loss at the hands of Carisbrook.
Trentham made a positive start smashing on five goals in the first term and keeping Newstead to 1.2.
The Steaders upped the ante in the second kicking another three goals, but the Saints were on fire booting another eight to lead by 53 points at half-time.
Newstead fought hard in the third kicking two more goals to try and bridge the gap, but the Saints still managed three and had extended their lead to 61 points at the final change.
To their credit Newstead lifted again in the final quarter kicking another 3.4 and holding to the Saints to a solitary point to win the term.
But it was too little, too late with Trentham winning by 40 points.
Best for the home side were Hayden Hall with two goals, Michael Dalrymple and Alex Murphy.
Best for Trentham were James Regan with five goals, Zachary Gervasoni, and Thomas Fuller.
KEOGH’S 300
Jake Keogh, one of Trentham’s all-time great players, chalked up 300 games on Saturday.
A very loyal player, Keogh has kicked well over 700 goals for the Saints over a long period.
A very strong and adaptable forward, Keogh was applauded on Saturday againt Newstead, and thanked for his tremendous service.
Over the years he has resisted offers from several other clubs, and stayed a Saint.
Supporters are sure Keogh has plenty more goals left before he finally decides to hang up his boots.
In other matches, Dunolly went down to Natte Bealiba by 67 points, Avoca lost to Lexton by 34 points, Carisbrook recorded a 66-point Maryborough Giants and Navarre fell to Talbot by 69 points.Harcourt had the bye.
NETBALL
In A Grade clashes Campbells Creek 63 recorded a fantastic win over Maldon 34. Best for Creek was Elouise Jones with 39 goals. Best for Maldon was Claire Kelly.
Newstead 50 had a close win over Trentham 42. Best for the Steaders was Brianna Jury with 29 goals. Best for the Saints was Kasey Button with 22 goals.
In other matches Avoca 62 defeated Lexton 29, Dunolly 35 lost to Natte Bealiba 84, Carisbrook 65 defeated 57, Navarre v Talbot – no results received. Harcourt had the bye.
THIS WEEKEND
In round four matches this weekend, Harcourt fresh from two weeks rest will host Maldon, Natte Bealiba welcome Newstead, Campbells Creek take on Avoca, Trentham host Maryborough Giants, Lexton face Navarre and Carisbrook welcome Talbot. Dunolly will have the bye.
