The Castlemaine Magpies made the trek to Wade Street to tackle Golden Square last Saturday in round nine action.

The Magpie Seniors were determined to get back on the winners’ list against the battling Bulldogs side.

Castlemaine wasted no time peppering the goals and were finally rewarded with a goal to Brodie Byrne.

Minutes later Byrne pegged his second giving the visitors a handy lead.

Golden Square fought back late in the term and finally got a goal on the board through Jack Stewart.

The Magpies led by 10 points at the change.

The Bulldogs continued to work hard early in the second term and added goals from Xavier Carter and Luke Holt before Castlemaine found another.

The Magpies maintained a slender two-point lead at half-time.

The spectators were in for a show in the third term with both sides rising to the challenge and kicking four goals apiece.

Castlemaine held on to a one-point advantage at the final change.

Sensing a whiff of a potential win the Bulldogs pulled out all the stops in the final term kicking three more goals and stifling the Magpies opportunities to score to snatch victory by 23 points.

Best for the Magpies were Ryan Eyre, Callum McConachy, Patrik Balta, Michael Hartley, Hunter Staples and Harrison Sheahan.
