Volleyball upsurge in Macedon Ranges

In the past five years, the district volleyball participation level has soared by about 400 per cent.

There are plenty of different sports to choose from in the Macedon Ranges, and volleyball looks certain to make a huge impact in 2025-2026.

In the past five years, the district volleyball participation level has soared by about 400 per cent.

Macedon Ranges Volleyball Association president, Monique Faulkner, and the current committee members are elated about the progress being made.

“We’re very proud to share that our club was recently awarded the 2024 Association of the Year by Volleyball Victoria,” Monique told the Express.

“Additionally, we are about to take a huge step forward by entering the Volleyball Victoria State League — the highest level of competition in the state.

“This milestone marks an incredible progression for our club, from starting as a small social group 30 years ago, to now competing at state level.”

Over three decades, the MRVA has become more than just a club — it’s a community.

Many of today’s juniors are following in the footsteps of their parents who once played for the association. Returning players are even stepping back onto the court to compete alongside their children in social competitions, highlighting the family spirit that has always been at the heart of the MRVA.

“We’re also the only regional club joining the State League this side of Victoria that trains together, which makes the achievement even more exciting for our community,” Monique said.

The big step forward in a growth area is seen as reflecting the hard work, talent and determination of the MRVA committee, players, coaches, parents and supporters.

ABOUT OPPORTUNITY

The MRVA sees the step into VVL as more than about competition — it’s about opportunity!

The association now offers a full pathway for players — from teaching at local schools, to open training sessions for beginners learning the basics, to junior and senior development squads, and now all the way through to State League competition.

MRVA has female only and mixed team competitions playing regularly across different levels.

Training takes place at Riddells Creek Leisure Centre on Sunday afternoons, and there’s Monday night competition at the modern courts at the New Gisborne Stadium.

In recent years, MRVA teams have chalked up incredible success at tournaments across the state, proving a regional club can compete with the best.

Volleyball is truly an international sport, and some Australian players have begun their careers at local levels. The MRVA would love to produce future national representatives.

With 2026 marking a new chapter for the MRVA, the committee and MRVA community can’t wait to see district players taking the court at state level.

The MRVA welcomes new players, coaches and supporters to join in the challenging step forward.

“With teamwork, support and dedication, we’re confident our association will continue to thrive,” the president concluded.
