Cannons fire against Tigers

The Castlemaine Cannons Country Basketball League sides took on the Maryborough Blazers at Castlemaine’s War Memorial Stadium at Wesley Hill last Saturday night.

The Cannons Women were first to hit the court and found the going tough against the top-placed Blazers.

Borough opened their ledger with a 33-point-to-five haul in the first term and went on to dominate the second and third quarters.

The Cannons bounced back in the final stanza netting 21 points to 25 but the Blazers claimed the win 111 to 33. Top scorer for the Cannons was Elise Hogan with 13 points. Best on Court was Poppy Blanch.

Despite the setback, the Castlemaine side remains in third place on the table.

The Cannons Men have continued where they left off after their grand final success in 2024 and had four wins from four matches on the board going into Saturday night’s clash against the Maryborough Blazers.

The were evenly matched in the first term with the Cannons 22 leading the Blazers 16 at the first change.

Castlemaine upped the ante in the second quarter smashing on 38 points to Maryborough’s 19.

The third quarter saw both sides nab 24 points apiece.

The Blazers continued that positive momentum into the last term shooting 19 points to the home side’s 13. But the damage had been done and the Cannons ran out victors 97 to 75. Top scorers for the Cannons were Jake Lloyd 18 and Ray Turner 18. Best on Court went to Lloyd.

On Sunday the Cannons backed it up with a double header welcoming the Kyneton Tigers to Castlemaine’s War Memorial Stadium for a lunchtime fixture.

The Cannons opened their account with a 31-to-13-point haul in the first quarter and were never headed, claiming a comfortable win 109 to Kyneton’s 53. Top scorers for Castlemaine were Ray Turner 26 and Jake Lloyd 19. Best on Court was Jake Lloyd. Top scorers for the Tigers were Liam Callaghan 11 and Preston Risicato 9. Best on for the Tigers were Josh Mundy, Preston Risicato and Cooper Cunnington.

The Castlemaine Cannons remain on top of the table, with the Kyneton Tigers sitting sixth.

This weekend the Cannons Women’s and Men’s sides both have double headers taking on the Bendigo Braves at Red Energy Arena this Saturday night November 1 at 5pm and 7pm and then heading south on Sunday November 2 to take on Bacchus Marsh at the Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Centre at 12 noon and 2pm.

The Kyneton Tigers Men will head to Melton to take on the Thoroughbreds on Sunday November 2 at Cobblebank Stadium at 2pm.
