From Woodend to the big stage: Cooper Duff-Tytler’s AFL dream

Cooper and his brother Tobi.

From kicking a footy in Woodend to playing on the MCG on Grand Final Day, 18-year-old Cooper Duff-Tytler is proving that dreams born on country ovals can lead to the nation’s biggest stage.

Cooper began his football journey at Woodend Junior Football Netball Club, inspired by Sunday games with mates like Willem Hanegraaf. Coached early by his dad Jason and Tony Hanegraaf, he learned teamwork and humility – values that still shape his game today.

A gifted all-round athlete, Cooper represented Australia in basketball before choosing to focus on football in 2024 after being selected for the elite AFL Academy.

“I wanted to put all my time into one sport and try to excel,” he said.

Basketball, however, left its mark: “Spatial awareness and ball control are strengths in my game that basketball has helped with.”

In 2024, Cooper debuted for the Calder Cannons, earning best-on-ground in four of his six games. He also played in the AFL Futures Game on Grand Final Day at the MCG — an unforgettable milestone. His belief in an AFL future first sparked during his debut for Vic Metro U16s.

Back home, he made his senior debut for Woodend Hesket alongside his brother Tobi, a proud moment for both family and club. “The Woodend Hawks mean a lot to me. The ongoing support from the club is pretty special,” he said.

In September 2025, Cooper kicked three goals in his VFL debut for Essendon, confirming his status as a genuine AFL prospect.

With the AFL Draft approaching in November, Cooper remains focused.

“If you put your head down and do the work you can get the results,” he said. His goals are clear – get drafted, build a long career, become a reliable teammate, and one day, win a premiership.

His advice to young players: “Find what you’re good at, use your strengths each week, and enjoy the journey.”
